240sx vs 180sx - difference?

Hi guys,

I was wondering what the difference is between the 240sx (Silvia) and the 180sx? What are the different characteristics etc? What are the goods and the bads of each? Give us some feedback - I personally just have a thing against Silvia's, i bloke I hate owns one so it has really pushed me off them, try to change my mind or are 180's better? I own a 300 so I not thinking of buying one or another.

180sx=CA18DET engine, 172hp. Straight 4 1.8 single turbo, great boost, instant power, not much lag. Great drift car.
240sx=(USA)KA24DE engine, 170hp Straight 4 2.4. Truck powered engine. Ok power, great for drifting, cheap to get your hands on.. EASY to tune.
240sx/Silvia=(JPN)SR20DET engine, 220hp, easy to boost power. EXCELENT for drifting. Wish I were Japanese. haha.

Because I am absoulutely negative about buying a Silvia (for my younger bro; with his money) what's the best engine to put in a 180sx? I've heard that the CA18 is a good engine? Alot better built than the SR20! What does everyone reckon about an engine swap for the 180sx?

Either RB25DET (my Boss did this in his 1990 Fastback, runs 11.4 1/4 methinks, could be wrong) or SR20DET, dont go CA18DET, they peices of shit, haha. I can send you some pics of my bosses engine bay if anyone doesnt believe me. And I can give you some details on how to perform this swap. Peace

that guy must REALLY know how to tune his car.... best i've seen out of an sr, completely stock but completely tuned is a 12.9. very good considering they run about a 14.5 stock......................

rb26dett runs a 12.3 stock when placed in a 240sx.

Not a bad idea. Skylines are common as shit though over here at the moment. There are more bloody skylines then there are Commodores. That's why I got a 300, but now there are probably about half a dozen of those running around just in my town.

How about a rb25det? That would fit in a 180 wouldn't it?

first of all, let me say you know NOTHING about 240's, so don't act like you do.

ka24e has 135hp in the 89's. in the 90's it has 140hp due to different compression setting. it was used in trucks but in a different setup in the early 80's. very good engine when turboed, maybe better than sr.
ka24de has 155hp.
all ka-t's are custom, they never made one from nissan.
ca18det has 175hp, nice engine if on a budget. underrated.
sr20det has 205hp in the s13's, 220hp in the s14's and 250hp in the s15's. engine of choice do to super street........... not the absolutely best way to go unless you're autocrossing. overrated.
drag racing... only engine to have is a rb25det or rb26dett. rb25 has 250hp stock with much stronger internals than any other engine. rb26 has 300hp+ and was underrated when they released hp figures for them to be legal in japan.

and please dont tell me any of this is wrong, because it isn't. i spent three years owning and researching this car. i know a lot about them.


last thing i gotta say... why wasn't this posted in the 240sx forums? a 240sx is not a z. mod should move it over....

Is the engine bay the same size with the 240 as the 180?

you should also wish you knew what you were talking about.

"truck powered engine"? if that even began to make sense youd still be wrong. i never heard of an engine powered by a truck. plus the truck ka24s are meade in mexico whiel the 240sx ka24s were made in japan.

also, the 180sx (91+) came with an sr20det rated at 205 hp. your dumb, im not even gonna acknowledge what you say, youre now on my ignore list so dont bother trying to respond to this post.

VG30DETT or RB26DETT? Which one would be better for a 300zx? N/A at the moment.

i believe the vg30 is native to the 300zx. lot cheaper.... same hp figures. keep it in the bay and just mod it.

Well Im just going to discard the shit talking for a moment. Due to the fact that I was just trying to give you some "nut-shell" info... I mostly know Skylines if its any constelation. But I dont see where any of my info was wrong other than some hp? Anyways, VG30DETT deffinately would be a better pick methinks. But make sure you get a clip, because its not just the drivetrain that is different, theres lots more. I am currently working on this conversion myself, and its not easy, but its not hard... Dig? It's not built as good as RB, nowheres near as good.. But still, I would go with VG personally. But yea, in the 240 body you have, the RB25DET engine wouldnt be very hard to install. I think you have to buy new radiator fans, cut a little bit of the hood support out, and the mounts are similar, so its not too hard... This has all been relayed to me through another source, and if you would like that source if you are doing the swap, just shoot me a line [email protected]. He can provide you pictures, and a description of the task. And for the rest of you, I believe that RazorGTR said it best

O and about the RB25DET in the 240. He is very knowledgable with these engines, and like I said "could be wrong", which I think I am... Ill find out for you in the days to come. But anyways, He is currently working on a KA that will be pushing 12's. Methinks it will have 280bhp(at the wheels) when shes all done. It's only at about 170bhp right now. I believe the sponsorship company's will have put 28-30g into it by the time its done. Peace

Wow - i was really suprised with that response. I did some research during my lunch break and it seemed like the rb26dett was an awesome engine that would be alot better than the vg30dett. Just making sure that you got the right info - RB26DETT over a VG30DETT? Going into a 300zx
