Angry 87' Nissan 4x4 Accelaration problems

My Hardbody with the Z24i 4 cyl Motor idles great, but when I try to accelerate it lurches and sputers. Trying to accelerate up a hill is impossible. If I really try to put my foot into it when it does this I can smell un-burnt fuel. If I baby it it will go. Already replaced the fuel filter and plugs but didn't change anything. Any suggestions to a fix would be great. The only thing I think it might be is either the fuel pump or fuel pressure reg? If anybody else has any idea please let me know! I don't want to just start swapping parts as they are quite expensive. HELP!

Re: 87' Nissan 4x4 Accelaration problems

I am having the same problem with my 86 Nissan 2wd pickup. Same engine same problem. Does adding carb cleaner help any? It gives me a small amount of improvement, or could be just coincidence..... Give it a try, and let me know.

Just a thought. Have either of you inspected the distributor cap and rotor. The cap has a tendency to wear one coil post inside the cap more than the other. If you have the "craziness", while engine is running pull one coil wire off at the distributor end at a time to see if the engine rpm drops evenly and spark kv is close to equal between the two.
