My ultimate McLaren F1 souvenir...

Well, the auction for the McLaren F1 center steering wheel badge just ended on Ebay with me as the high bidder.

The price for this item ended up at £102.00 (or roughly $175.00). Some might think that is a bit ridiculous (even me, truthfully), but I was willing to pay more for it though. My final bid was over $200.00 actually - lucky for me you only have to eclipse the next highest bid to win the item. Honestly, I figured that another opportunity to add something like this to my F1 collection wouldn't be coming along anytime soon, hence the high price.

You'll have to excuse me for not sharing info of this auction here sooner. I really wanted to own it and I figured that I didn't need to increase the competition for it by showing it to several people who may have also wanted to make it their's. I also figured that someone else would probably spot it and post it anyway, but no one did.

= = = = =

The same seller is also offering two other items which currently have much lower prices. Some of you might be interested in them, so I'll post them here now. These two auctions are both scheduled to end in just over 12 hours. Click the photo to go directly to the auction page.

McLaren F1 Track Record Plate

McLaren F1 Oil Check Plate

Anyway - I'll try to take a nicer photo of this item when it arrives, but I was very excited to win and thought I would share.

Re: My ultimate McLaren F1 souvenier...

Hello Erik !

It's great, I am happy for you.
Do you know how this person has this object ??

Do you know if Driving Ambition is available in new ?

Goodbye
Philippe

The seller told me that he picked up the items at a motoring memorabilia auction. I assume he paid a lot less for them as his reserve on each one was rather low.

I don't think "Driving Ambition" is available from anywhere 'new'. There was talk of a reprint from Virgin Books, but I don't know if that really happened. Maybe someone has more information on that.

I don't think it came off of any car. The description from the auction page says that the adhesive backing is still covered, making this item new. I suspect the factory may have ordered a certain number and had several left over. Hopefully they won't start appearing on Ebay next week with "Buy it now" prices of $25.00.

Incidentally, I still haven't gotten this item framed yet. You may recall that I picked this up on Ebay a few months back for about $50.00.

Here's the description on the print:

Quote:
McLaren F1 Supercar Ltd Edition Print

* * * * * * * * * *

"The pinacle of Twentieth-Century High Performance Sports Car Design". This beautiful image is a 15 Color screened and multi-varnished serigraph commissioned by McLaren Racing Technology in England. This limited edition image has been created for McLaren by AUTOMOBILE magazine contributing photographer Colin Curwood. Only 500 serigraphs were created for worldwide distribution, and only 200 were available in the USA. Each serigraph is hand-screened in England onto a British non-acidic ph, museum quality paper stock. Each image is then signed and numbered by Colin Curwood, Gordon Murray and Peter Stevens the chassis and body designers.

OVERALL DIMENSIONS 33x35 inches ( Frame not included, only print )
Now, when I do get it framed, I'm going to have them cut out a small square of the matting for this badge to be mounted in. I think it will be a nice touch.

EDIT: That will also keep me from losing this thing since it's rather small at 36mm in diameter.

I wanted to try for the race history plaque but my bid at the end was way off. It went from around $30 right up to $90 in the final minute. I suspect that there is a ton of McLaren memoribilia lying around. They planned to make 350 cars.

Well, for those of you who might want one, the same seller has another center wheel emblem back up on Ebay.

I guess if it ends up selling for a lot less money, then one could say I made a bad decision jumping on the first one. I had no way of knowing it wouldn't be the only one though.

Anyway - I'm still happy to be getting mine and have no regrets.

Good luck if you choose to bid.

Re: My ultimate McLaren F1 souvenier...

That is very interesting. Using Altavista's Babelfish, the description translates to: "Here it concerns an original intake manifold MC of a Laren F1 road version! Sales because of bankruptcy! Much fun when offering!!!"

Pretty cool - maybe I can start buying my McLaren F1 piece by piece. Hey, it might be cheaper that way.

Thanks for the link - it's not something I would want to own per se, but maybe one of the owners here would like to have a spare.

I agree - the price for that came in very low. If I could have thought of something to do with it, I would have gotten up at 6AM PST and made sure I was the winner. I just didn't really want it since I had no idea what I would do with it. I mean if they auctioned off one of the headers, that might be neat to mount to a placque and hang from the wall, but I remember reading those things were $12,000 a piece or something crazy like that.

= = = = =

The seller of the center steering wheel emblem is now auctioning off the entire wheel center for the McLaren F1 including the carbon fiber surround. Had I not "blown my wad" on the individual center emblem I might be interested. Maybe some of you will be though.

He claims it is from XP5 - and one could assume that they may have replaced that part a few times when it was freshened up to keep it looking new. Anyway, click the picture to go to the auction page for it.
