Re: Reading the Skyline badging code

actually R33's came with RB20E (naturally aspirated single overhead cam 2L engines too)

the E actually stands for "Electronic Fuel Injection" or EFI.

R32's never came out with RB25DET's only RB25DE's. They did come with CA18DE's and RB20E's tho (base model family versions commonly known as Type X's and Type G's).

Re: Reading the Skyline badging code

Apparently there were a very few R32s just at the end of production with RB25DETs. True or not, I don't know.

For the engine codes, the RB has no meaning, it is merely the manufacture's code, the 'race breed' is a term that enthusiasts came up with to make the engine sound even better then it already is. (If anyone can disprove with fact please do because I'd love it if it were true. If so, also explain the letter codes for the other Nissan greats: CA, SR, VG and the new VQ.)

The E in RB20DET for example stands for ECCS which is the intake/fuel injection system that is used.

The R32's didn't issue factory with the RB25DET. Here's the R32 model lineup:

GXi - CA18i (was carb'ed so no E)
GTE - RB20E
GTS - RB20DE
GTS25 - RB25DE
GTS-t - RB20DET
GTS4 - RB20DET (AWD)
and the great GTR! - no explaination nessecary!

The R33 non-turbos did come with either the RB20E or the RB25DE, both called a GTS. Don't know what Nissan was thinking with that one.

(edited to correct the CA18, accidently put D instead of i)

Not true, towards the end of the run, RB25DE's were put into R32 GTS25's but never DET's.

As for ECCS, I've read that in a japanese website as well, but then I've seen EFI in others, I'm assuming they both refer to fuel injection systems. I tend to refer to it as EFI but I think proper japanese acronym was ECCS. Do you know what it stood for?

And yeah the R33 GTS Type G was the RB20E I think (will have to double check the sales brochure)

Hello,

I've seen cars with GTS4 badging but only four wheel studs, I thought that means a car without a turbo (RB20DE or RB25DE)?

How to recognise a 4x4?? Well, look inside for the traction control metre or look on the outside for a blue GT badge.

The dude who imported my R32 reckons R32s com in 4x4 or Turbo or 4x4 with Turbo.

-Ben

p.s. The VG stands for Very Good
The CA stand for Commin' Around (you)
The SR stands for better on Straight Roads and
The VQ stand for Very Quick

- of course!!

Jazzxxx, I like the engine code listing you have
Also, I accidently put CA18D it should read CA18i (SOHC, and carb'ed)

Directly out of the Engine service manual, here's what the E on Nissan engines stands for, ECCS which stands for: Electronically Concentrated engine Control System

Just so there's no confusion I'm talking about the R32 model in the following:

I used to think the lugs gave away the engine being turbo'ed or not, for the majority it does, but it seems the GTS4 may be an exception.
While I was still in Japan my neighbor had a GTS4 that I drooled over and it also had the same 4-lugs and crappy brakes/rotors as my GTE did originally.
It was turbo and the engine hadn't been swapped (it's easy to tell in Japan, either their info on the car's tag doesn't match the engine (like mine) or they have to put a new tag on that does, and you can tell the tags not factory, and in some cases change the reg. plates)
I've only seen and heard of the GTS4 being an RB20DET, I've been lucky enough to see two and they were both equiped with that factory. However, I can't say for certain that all GTS4's are turbo'd.

Re: Reading the Skyline badging code

5-lug means M-Spec with the big brake option (i.e. GTR brakes). 4-lugs are non-M-Spec but can be turboed.

AFAIK there was a run of RB25DET R32 GTS-t's at the end of production. It was a special option code from the dealers. Not many were made, so they are rare.

As perhaps the owner of the only Skyline on AF powered by the small but noble CA18i 4-pot, I can safely say that CA,when applied to Skylines, stands for Can't Accelerate.

So glad I gave it to my wife and got me an R33!

they are. the longer gearing means that you dont need to shift as much, and going through corners is easier because you can enter and exit in the same gear.

the ka series (usdm 240sx) had shorter gears, and is more suited for straight line performance.
