97 Cav with high K has engine shake

Hi there, i just got a 1997 cavalier SE with the 2.2L and i think its the 3-spd auto. The car has 372,000K on it LOL, its just a winter car so i dont mind the K and the car seems to still run very strong.

The main problem it has is that at idle either in park or in drive at a stop, it has alot of engine shake and i noticed that the engine looks like its running fine but the whole engine is rocking in the bay.

So i dont know if it needs the engine rubber mounts changed or if there is a engine stablizer thats bad, i wont know till i take it in to get checked but i was wondering if anyone has any info the can throw at me.

Thanx.

OK i was hunting more thru the forums and i saw that a post talked about engine mounts, and that carcustom.net has aftermaket mounts and or a mount shim. So is changing the mount or putting a shim in an easy job or do you need to lift the car and use tackle to lift the engine.

Reason im asking i only have basic tools and i do repairs on my vehicles but i havent tried mounts yet lol.

Thanx for any help.

Depends which mount, you should use a hydraulic jack and a block of wood and place it under the oil pan and lift to ease the engine tension then you can just replace the mount.

Ok ill try that when i get the new mounts i guess i can replace both the top and bottom mounts. I don't know if this motor had work done to it, but if the mounts are original then 372,000 kms is alot of wear on the mounts.

this is very common in cavaliers from 95-99. The mounts arent very good......not bad, just not good. You can buy better mounts, and it stops the shaking. Dont worry, youre engine isnt going to come flying out or anything, everything is fine. Ive got 90k mi on my 95, and it does the same thing but its fine. Unless you can actually feel it inside or notice it big time.....

One thing to consider, are you certain you don't have a miss at low RPM?
