Some help, kinda wierd problem thanks

Hey guys, i drive a dodge stealth 1991.. and i was driving today and i heard something in the engine.. well i open the hood while its still running and listen when the hose going from the radiator, the top one just exploded and a bunch of steam and water came out ... i turn the engine off and found the hose in pieces.... im guessing pressure built up but is this a common problem or? any help/input on this would be greatly appriciated.. thanks in advance!
