Tranny problem

I have a '96 camaro with the 3800 engine and 4L60E transmission. A while back I started getting a P1870 code (transmission component slipping) and the shift between 1st and 2nd gear is "stiff" but only after the car has been running for awhile. Has anyone else had this problem, and what was required to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Re: Tranny problem

I just had a similar problem with my 97 camaro 4l60e tranny. I got the same code as you except my first to second shift felt like I had been rear-ended. After getting a transmission shop to look at it, it required a rebuild. My torch converter and overdrive band were bad along with my tranny mounts. I had them rebuild the tranny for about $1500 bucks. They replaced both items above and installed a Superior technology shift kit (http://www.supersportperformance.com/4thgenfbody.htm)to eliminate the 1870 code. You can also look at Transgo shift kits(http://www.transgoperformance.com), I have been told both are good. I have had my car back for about 3 days now and have only put about 60 miles on it but the improvement is monumental. Good luck with your repair.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up taking it to a reputable transmission shop and had them bore out the valve body for the TCC regulator valve and install an oversize Sonnax plunger. The repair cost $275 and solved the problem! There is no longer a "jolt" shifting between 1st and 2nd gear and it runs about 200 rpm less on the highway than it did before. The P1870 code is no longer triggered either. I did find out that I had another code related to the EGR valve (P1406) so that's next on my to-do list. Good luck to anyone else with the same problem.
