I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. All of my interior lights come on every once in a while and then I look down at the computer in the car and it says that my liftgate is open but it looks shut to me. They come on and then turn off and then turn on again. I took it into the shop and they said that there was caroshion around the liftgate switch. Then I took it home and then a day and a half later the lights started coming on again. So then I took it back to the shop and they put on a new switch and then they drove it around the parking lot and it still says that the liftgate is open.
Anyone have any ideas, because the dealership that I took it to doesn't seem to know how to fix it. Thanks and please help |

Same Problem
I just washed my 1996 Grand Cherokee and now have the same problem as you described. Were you ever able to get it fixed?

Re: Liftgate Problem on my 96 grand cherokee, Please help me
I had a similar problem on my 98. Every time I drove over a bump/dip, such as entering a driveway, the lights came on and then usually went off. It was really annoying. I think on the 96's the rear glass is fixed to the door, so I'm not sure if this helps, but my rear door has the flip-up glass, which ended up being the problem. I finally found the culprit by pushing hard on the outside handle of the glass. Every time I pushed in, the lights came on. I took off the liftgate interior panel and unplugged the wire connection from the flipper glass release mechanism that controls the lights. Problem solved. Not sure why it started doing this, since its stock, but I guess age and twisiting of the unibody made it loosen over time. Hope this helps.
