UVA Motorsports needs Help: Rear End Gear Repair for Celica (pre 85)
My name's Will. I race with the Motorsports team at University of Virginia. During a practice this weekend, our Legends car (which uses a pre '85 Celica rear end) threw a bearing in the rear-end gear. When we took it apart we knew this would be a simple repair, however, some questions were raised. The shim that connects the main bearing to the axel shaft, is this designed to permanently deform, or can it be reinserted? Also, are there any specific torques to put on the rear gear bolts? We have a race coming up and this is our second car. We never really have gotten this car running right, and, unfortunately, the Legends series is a very spec series. There isn't very much information out there about the equipment. I hope the drift crowd can help.
