1989 Firebird replaced Steering column, Now will not run????

My daughter has a 1989 Firebird that had a problem with the steering column and they replaced it with one from a salvage yard. She has told me that it will not run. It will start, but shuts off nearly immediately. Someone told her that she would have to have it towed to a dealership and spend $500 to do something to the computer to be compatible with the different key of the replacement steering column. Something to do with the Anti Theft system. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. I do not follow this forum, so if you have any suggestions, please email me at [email protected]

Thanks in advance for any and all help
