I have a 2001 Neon with 18k miles. A few months ago I noticed the first few times I would brake there would be screeching sound. Now when I am traveling at low speeds <25 miles per hour, I hear the same screeching sound depending on the position of my steering wheel. If I am turning to slightly to the right, I hear the noise, but not if I am turning to the left. I am assuming that the two problems are related. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same problem....
I have a 2002 SRT. It has 29000 miles on it. Everytime I break there is a loud screeching sound, and I think i hear it also when i make slight turns. I took it to Les Schwab and they told me my brakes where fine. I also took it to a local dodge dealership. They checked it out and told me that this is common in neon's but they said there was nothing they could do. Do I have to live with this embarassing screeching noise until i get a new car????

Re: Problem with brakes?
Usually the screeching sound is brake dust. It is very common with neon's that have rear drum brakes. I lived with it until the brakes were worn out and changed them with high quality ceramic pads, and shoes. Easy way to verify that it is brake dust is as follows: Buy a can of brake cleaner at any auto parts store. Take both front wheels off, and douse the rotor and caliper with the cleaner. Do the same in the back, or you can do one at a time to verify if its the rear or the front. If the screeching goes away for a little while after this, then it is a brake dust buildup.
