'99 Tahoe fuel pump-replace or not?????

Hello everyone I am new to the board and could use some advice.I own a '99 Tahoe police package. The truck has 108,000 miles and runs great,no drivability problems whatsoever. However starting just below a 1/2 tank of gas I will hear a loud humming from the rear of the truck.I know it's the fuel pump but the thing that is so preplexing to me is the humming noise COMES AND GOES,this noise is not constant once it starts.I can shut it off.Start it up and the noise is gone for a while and will come back. This is intermittent.Should I replace the fuel pump just to be safe?I am taking the truck on a trip soon and don't want to be stranded. Thanks in advance.

I have a 99 Tahoe myself and the fuel pump on mine is quite loud , too. A high-pitched whining sound, however mine stays constant all the time. You can't hear it as much when the tank is full, but thats just because its fully submerged. It's been like this ever since I've had the truck. I've heard that the pumps on these trucks are quite loud and usually not anything to worry about. The big thing is the sound is not constant and that might be something to worry about. Sounds like it might be going bad to me, but I'm sure you can get a more informed answer on here than me. I'd say replace it, especially since your going on a long trip soon. Expensive fix, though. Best wishes to ya.

If you know for sure it's the pump, REPLACE IT RIGHT A WAY! Mines went out on the h-way doing about 60mph, left me stranded for about 2 hrs. and cost $534.71.

If you have the $$$, replace the pump. It will run around $600 through the dealer, but it is better get get the pump swapped before it leaves you stranded. They have a known bad design (mine failed at 60k) and left me stranded on PCH in rush hour traffic blocking a lane of traffic.

The have a revised part for the pump which supposedly addresses the failure issue. With summer coming, it would suck to have it go out durring a weekend getaway or worse a week long road trip. Cheaper to pay now on your own terms, than be stuck paying for a tow and whoever is available to fix it near where you break down.
