Power Steering

I have a 1988 Toyota Supra. The power steering went out on it. I didn't have the time to change out the p/s pump my self, so I bought a p/s pump, and had Pep Boys install it. Only to get it back and the power steering is still not working. They told me it was a bad pump, the place I bought it from says they have never had one bad off the shelf like that. Well, my problem is, if I purchase another, Pep Boys will charge me another $190 to reinstall it. The original pump was bad, it was leaking oil and making noise. The new one does neither. Is there and easy way to check oil flow or line blockage? I don't want to have to install another pump, when this one might be good. The resevoir seems to be backing up and oil is coming out of it. So I have to think that the lines are clogged or something. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's definetly the reserviour. Take it off and clean it out, specificly the screen on the bottom of the reserviour that gets gummed up. By the way what kinda fluid did they put in it? Only use what the cap says, ATF dexron III. Whats this about not having time to change it out? Theres only like 2 bolts that hold it on, that's 30 minutes tops to swap the whole pump, the hardest part will be getting the lines off.

"30 minutes tops to swap the whole pump" huh...The Nichols' Chilton labor guide (2003) quotes this job at 2.8 hours. Unless you are a professional mechanic working exclusively on the Supra, that quote is doing a great disservice to those of us who do repair cars for a living. Beating the labor guide time is how I feed my family and provide a roof for them to live under. Please excercise a little more restraint or do the appropriate research when making guesses about the time(s) needed to effect a particular repair.

Are you questioning my ability to get the job done and basicly calling me a liar? If I said it's a 30 minute job then it's because I have PERSONALLY done the job in 30 minutes. Chiltons and Haynes are a GUIDE, not the end all be all to mechanic work, I can go through both of those books and point out problem after problem with installs, removals, wiring diagrams, ect ect. Just because you don't work on the MKIII exclusively and thus can not quickly analyze problems and swap parts does not mean you should come here, start a new account, and publicly disrespect myself. If you have a problem feeding your family or doing work then it's solely caused by your lack of skill, not my abilities. People like you are the exact reason I encourage others to work on their own cars for simple jobs requiring simple tools such as this one. Why pay someone like you for three hours of work when they could put that money into other repairs or mods, do the job in half the time, and learn more about their car in the process.

Oh my goodness......if you took that as a personal attack on you or your abilities then you should consider seeking some behavioral therapy. All I am trying to point out is that when a professional mechanic does a repair on a car (any car) he is trying to beat the labor time while correctly performing the repair. There are in fact people who do not mind spending money to have their car fixed because they do not want to learn how. Further, the Chilton labor guide is in fact the industry standard for calculating repair estimates.

Now regarding the personal attack made by you against me......I have no problem feeding my family because unlike you sound, I am a professional with quite a bit of skill and the certifications to prove it. I do not waste time pissing people off and making childish comments about them and/or their abilities. Please do not bother responding to this post.

The people who roll through AF because they found it on a google search. Your comments were obviously not personal attacks but mine were. I've seen no less than 100 of your kind float through this forum, just to challenge what I've said months and months ago only to forget they ever posted here. Now if you don't mind I'll go back to "making childish comments" and informing more enthusiasts on how to repair there cars without giving their money to you.

Dude...there is no reason to blast folks like that. He came here for help, and you just went off and ripped on him. All that dose is give you and the forum a black eye. Folks that have a good experience will come back, and tell thier freinds that this is a good place to find help. The community grows. If you rip on them they don't come back, nor do their friends check it out. The community dies. So please keep your cool, and show some courtisy.
