'96 Sable, SERVICE ENGINE SOON light?

Hey all,
the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light has come on in my '96 Sable.

How do i check the error code to see what the problem is?

I have a 2000 - but my book shows two different ways the light may look - one way means you better get to the auto mechanic soon - the other means it's detecting something that may be bad - one problem - gas cap not sealing well enough - other somekind of emission detection chip if I remember right - anyways - might detecter was defective and fell under warranty - thank goodness - but check your book and check your light - check your gas cap the seal may be worn out - other wise check with your mechanic.

Take it to Autozone (or some other parts stores or repair shops) and have them read the error codes.

often the oxegen sensor is gone in a car that old there are two of them. I don't advise it but I have a 96 sable and once it was the gas cap and then later it went on and that was a year ago or so I just get less gas milage and the car idles lower.

When my 96 sable reached about 100k miles the check engine light came up and i started having problems keeping the car cool in the summer. After i hit 133k miles it overheated and i realized my water pump and thermostat were shot. I changed my water pump and my sable started working fine and the check engine light disappeared
