Need a new engine for 95 GT fast, please help!!!!!

My 95 Sunfire GT just called it quits (at least the mechanic says its gonna need replaced). Driving down the road, tone of the engine changed, really bad sounding at WOT, no power uphill and blowing black smoke if I tried to make it up the hill. OK, now its my wife's car and I haven't been very good at oil changes (cause I can never get to it to see how many miles shes got on it, or to even change the oil). But anyway, 89,000 miles and this happens. Mechanic says replacement is the way to go, since it would be cheaper than tear down. The car still runs, but I fear that more damage would ensue. So, here's my dilemma!
GT's were built with two different engines that year, 2.3L < June >2.4L Quad 4s. Mechanic is saying that only just the right engine out of a early 95 Sunfire GT 2.3L quad 4 D-vin will work! What's up with that???? If the car was built with two different engines, would'nt a 2.4 work also. This Quad 4 2.3L seems hard to come by, especially out of a 95 SF GT. Can anyone shed some light on this for me and give me advice?

Thanks!

get one out of a GTZ or z26 beretta, more HP out of the box, and bolts right up.

Re: Need a new engine for 95 GT fast, please help!!!!!

its all OBD1, if its a stick, so its plug and play, but you might want to upgrade the computer to take advantage of the HP. Go to Mantapart to get more info. I'm doing this swap in the next few weeks myself, in the end I'll be over 200hp N/A.

If you are driving an Auto, then the 2.4 is the way to go. they can be found cheap enough here...

Pace Performance

Of course, you could change to the OBD1 setup, get a stick, and start really driving .

you need to change the wiring harness for the 2.4L, you don't need to for a 2.2L or another 2.3L. They're all shitty engines in the first place, swap it out for a 3.8L!!!!!!!!

2.3L is better than the 3.8L and some 5.0L of course this is opinion of course. Go to www.quad4forums.com for alot of good info on swaps and upgrades.
