L36 to L67 conversion

Can the 3800 series II supercharged L67 easily replace the 3800 engine in the camaro? I have read that you cannot bolt the stock supercharger on the camaro engine due to piston clearance problems, weaker piston rods, etc. I want the supercharged version in a rear-wheel drive format.

I was unaware that a blower had anything to do with piston clearance. The only differences between the GTP engine and the 3.8L for the camaro and the GTP besides the charger is the compression ratio (8.5:1 compared to 9.4:1 in the camaro) and the fuel delivery.

Plus the GTP engine is designed for sideways use. Just get the blower and run 6PSI to your engine. Should hold up perfect stock, but you'll need to get new injectors and reprogram the computer.

Re: L36 to L67 conversion

Thanks for the reply. Maybe it wasnt piston clearance - tried to find the article. Is there anything about being designed for sideways use that prohibits it from being bolted to a 4L60E tranny? Note that buying a whole used late-model supercharged buick engine out of a wrecked car is cheaper than buying a standalone rebuilt stock blower. I saw an article that indicated the bolt pattern wouldn't match up ...

I'm not really sure...but a side mounted engine is just DESIGNED to do the job that way...like the pully systems are different, and other things. I'd have to look. But still, you'd probably get way more power by just mounting the blower on your stock v6... I'd say bout 30 more than the stock GTP at least.

Thanks for the continued dialogue stingray. As you may have decided, this is new territory for me. Interesting that you think I should get more HP from the L36 engine than the L67 gets with the supercharger made for it. Why is this?

The compression ratio. More compression = more air per cubic inch = more fuel = more power. If you force feed air into a higher compression engine, you will get a more dramatic increase in power over boosting a lower compression engine.

However, there is a trade off. A lower compression engine can handle more boost than a higher compression engine.

Re: L36 to L67 conversion

I also have a 3800 series II in a 96 Camaro that i would like to bolt on a supercharger to. I have found several rebuilt superchargers from 3800 buicks and GTPs. Will they work? Will the mod effect my gas mileage? I am currently running a 5 sp manual mounted to 3.73 gears. The car was ready for an engine swap but the insurance would have been to much for me to handle, considering i'm only 17. If this is all possible, i know plenty of mechanics that will help me get it done. Please help!!

As far as the internals go, a L36 can handle quite a bit, not as much as the forged in a GTP but that can be handled by the boost level. The problem is, since the GTP motor is transversed, The throttle body is actually facing the wrong direction and the engine will have problems with clearing the firewall. In short, way, way, way to many problems and custom fabs to be practical.
