Re: turbo
A turbocharger uses exhaust energy to force more air into the engine.
If you want to make your 5S-FE faster, look on the MR2 board. Those guys can descent power from it. Search the 'net for "MR2 Owners Board" It's a rather large board, you'll know when you find it. |

Definatly check out that MR2 Board, some of those guys are power crazy on their 5SFE's.
I have a 93 GT and my friend they arent slow cars. They have incredible acceleration (gotta love that 145 ft/lb of torque). If you do go turbo, I would suggest just putting on a small turbo like a t2. Ive taken my celica up to 120 mph easily, all you really need is a little more low end horsepower to make your car a real competitor. |

Re: turbo
no problem. the MR2 uses the same 5S-FE as you've got, so yes, most will fit! :P
A small turbo will increase power by 50 hp atleast. It all depends in what you get, and how you're going to control it. You're stock ECU, cannot control the additional fuel, and timing changes, that a turbo would bring. . |

Re: turbo
that's the thing, you'll need a complete "kit"
even with all the turbo parts in place; you'll still need electronic control. Your ECU isn't programmed to suit a turbo. Perform a search on the MR2 board ( http://www.board.mr2faq.com ) or just look throughout their archives. You'll see plenty of info on how to turbo a 5S-FE. I'm no expert in turbocharging , normally NA engines. So, I can only point you in some direction. Good Luck |

Honestly the 5SFE is a great engine, but due to its lack of a aftermarket. It might be better for u to swap in a 2nd gen 3SGTE. I hv a 5SFE in my 90 GTS. I hv CAI, FUll exhaust, Nology Plugs, NGK performance wires and lightened flywheel. All of these mods make me faster but truly the 3SGTE will really put us where we need to be. The turbo kit for the 5SFE is reliable, but rather expensive. The 3SGTE swap can get u any hp amount u desire, honestly with that enigin in your car, not many things can touch u, especially when its modded. I hv found a 2nd gen 3SGTE for $1550 and a place to install it for $2000. The turbo kit alone on the 5SFE is $2500 and still does not include an intercooler. I am not saying that the 5SFE is a bad engine, its just the 3SGTE is actually a performance engine and the 5SFE is not.
The "G" in 3SGTE means peroformance The "F" in 5SFE means economy |

Re: turbo
If you're going to swap an engine in, get an entire clip. That way you can re-coup your losses by selling some ot the other gear you don't need.
Plus, IF you swap a 3S-GTE in, you'll need things you may not have gotten with just the enigne. ECU and harness comes to mind. A few sensors, etc... Don't forget if you get an engine different that the one you have, you'll need something (ECU) to control the fuel and timing! IF you get a clip, make sure you get one with an un-cut harness. Try http://www.jarcoinc.com they resently had a 3S-GTE out of a CS/RC. ECU and all. I feel the same as 90CelicaGTS. You cannot make something fast if it sucks.. no disrespect intended.

naw if u want real power get the 3rd gen... 45 extra hp compared to usd and 20 more hp than jdm 2nd gen 3S-GTE... a lot of times turboing a 5S-FE is not worth it... there is a higher chance of it breaking... theres a reason y turbos are 2L n n/a's are 2.2L
and also if you don't kno wut a turbo does, then you probably dont kno much about them so a tip: when youre looking at kits online or n/e thing like that, when someone says 490hp+ dont believe it... you will only get that much hp if you have many other mods done to the car and also huge turbos like the T78 or T88 are not worth driving on the street because the spool is too slow for you to have any fun... they are only good if you drag.. finally, how much is overboard? |

Re: turbo
In some people opinion, 20HP isn't enough to justify the markup on a 3rd gen 3S-GTE.
But, you do get a real nice turbo in the CT-20B. That would be my reason for getting the third gen. Unless you were going to go for over 400WHP. But under that you can't beat the CT-20B. And if under ~320WHP is your goal, the CT-26 is just fine. Over 300WHP is a LOT of power for the street. Very quick spool with either CT turbo. |

Re: turbo
There have been plenty of people that turbocharge the 5S-FE, even though it's 2.2L.
I know 3S-GTE owners who have 2.2L stroker kits. IF you do a 5S-FE turbo right, it'll be just fine. Over 500WHP. Look at Aaron Bunch's MR2 from ATS Racning (http://www.atsracing.net) Look on the MR2 Owners Club Message Board (search for just that, any search engine) There is a nice amount of info if you look around. Another source, for 3S-GTE, are the gt4 lists on yahoo groups and http://www.alltrac.net later. don't trust anyone, just educate yourself. |
