Auto DX coupe puts Mercedes SLK to shame

I never would have imagined this being able to happen.

I was out driving on PCH last night going north from Newport on up to Huntington Beach. I came up on this silver SLK (top was up if that makes any difference) and he seemed like he might have been looking for a light to light run or something since when I passed him, he made a point to try not to let me pass, or at least just to get back ahead of me, of which I wasn't even trying to mess with him before this, just happened to come up on him. So we both pull up to a red. It turns green and the next light is not very far ahead, I could tell he was gonna try to go for it from the light, then this next one turns red when we come up on it. I didn't even bother looking over at the driver whom looked like in his mid 30's to 40's. Light turns green and I just mash the gas. We both kept bumpers even through 1st, though he was VERY slowly pulling on me. Before my automatic (yes auto tranny I have) upshifts to 2nd, he shifts his 5-speed into 2nd and lags a bit shifting. it appeared he was shifting way too soon and it was just killing his groove. As his next shift comes it puts him back yet again as he had gained back even with me from the first lagging shift. Once my 3rd starts getting into the mid range at around 65mph while still at WOT, (road is WIDE open at this point) I just walk away from him leaving him behind. My shifts weren't even breaking my stride, though I wouldn't expect them to, just smooth constant power through out the run for me. Also of intersting note, I had a passenger with me, and the SLK did not. I was utterly surprised that I could even take him, but then again they are just a 200 something HP V6 (non Kompressor model) though he still packs 2 more cylinders and twice as much HP as I do, plus less weight I'm sure, thought that auto folding hardtop weighs a vonsiderable bit. My auto killing his manual is what left me in awe even more, but he also had some real crappy shifting I could tell and saw. And it wasn't a one time fluke either. When we got to the next light which was red after that 1/3rd mile or so run, we went at it again, but I let off after my shift to 3rd and his shifts were still too soon and just lacking bigtime putting him back a fair amount when shifting. Good kill though I feel, and I'm sure he wasn't too proud to lose to a WAY disadvantaged Civic.

That sounds awesome. He must of just got it and didn't want to run his baby hard -or- was braking it in -or- just didn't know when to shift. Hell of a brake-in loosing to a civic. Very very very nice kill I always wondered what a race like that would be like.

The guy in the slk must have been retarded to loose to a dx, even shifting early he shouldve won, im sure slks can smack me, and my car packs a 160 hp punch, not a 105....maybe he wasnt racing?

Possible, but I'd think he'd just lay the smack down and pass me to make a point, of which he didn't do.

So correction on them being a 4 cyl. That means they have less than 200hp? Eitherway he should have otherwise wone. I could tell he was trying though, I mean he was really trying to pull from me I could tell, but just didn't know how to shift it or drive it or both, I dunno. Gotta love auto though, put it in D4 (or D3 if you don't want a 4th upshift) and go!

It's 106, and not even since I have a few mods, no more than 115 though, so still underpowered in comparison eitherway. He was definitely racing though. He wasn't jumping the line like he began to once I got up to him and we went for it at the light. You can usually tell when some one is racing.

It actually does have a V6 if it is not the kompressor model. The kompressor is a supercharged 4 cylinder with somewhere around 190HP. The V6 has 215HP and 229lbs of torque and it should have smoked you either way. I have driven one of those and it was actually a V6 auto and it was very quick. The manuals are even faster and it would put a civic to shame. The stats on an auto SLK with the V6 are:0-60 in 6.8 and 1/4 mile in 14.8.

So what happened here is that the guy obviously didn't know the first thing about driving his car.

Nice kill though. It's always fun hearing about a relativly slow car (no offense) beating a cocky guy in a pretty powerful sportscar.

Word to that!

I was too lazy to look up the SLK stats online when I posted this, so forgive me on that part. But yeah, no matter its motor, it should have won no matter what. Just goes to show that even though you may have enough $$$ too afford something, doesn't mean you know how to use it to its fullest.

link for the slk230 (one that you raced)

http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container...delCode=SLK230

link for the slk320

http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container...delCode=SLK320

he should have won easily because manual slk 230's will do 0-60 in anywhere from 7.2 to 7.5 (depending on the driver), but automatics will be around 7 flat. MB manuals aren't nearly as good as the automatics and they usually hamper the performance instead of help it (except for the C320 w/a manual that runs 0-60 in 5.9 secs-auto runs 6.7). thus, if he had a manual MB and he didn't know how to shift he's up a creek without a flippin paddle.

Awesome kill!!!!

teach those MB drivers that just because they have the money to afford a nice car doesn't mean they can step all over lesser ones.

Re: Auto DX coupe puts Mercedes SLK to shame

Good kill!! Glad to hear somebody else's DX is winning out there! Maybe you can track the guy down and offer to give him driving lessons! I've driven one of the SLK230 manuals, and it seemed way faster than my DX.

how'd i miss this thread?

[quote=SilverY2KCivic]It's 106, and not even since I have a few mods, no more than 115 thoughQUOTE]
few=3 I counted 2.

but seriously, i'm suprised no one raised the bs flag. Just the title alone is enough to get people in here to start flaming. I would've loved to been in your position matt. Nice road, nice scenery, nice cars, and winning.

106hp auto honda beats 190 hp manual mercedes; who knew?

I believe it all and that's why my first reaction was "that's just sad"
What's even sadder is that he would've won if he had an automatic.
