Glen, you probably got your manual by now, but if not...all I did to program the onboard remote was hold one of the remotes that came with the door opener a few inches away from the onboard remote and press/hold both of them at the same time...within a few seconds the onboard message center said something like "remote programmed". If your opener has a "learn" button I understand you can also press that and then run to the van and press/hold the onboard remote button.
