The ECM looks at the cam sensor and compares those readings with others it gets from the crank, vehicle speed, and various other readings to compare these readings. It may falsely condemn the cam sensor if some reading does not compare between it and another sensor. The ECM cannot distinguish which reading is incorrect; it can only determine a mismatch and guess. I would suspect the air flow sensor, the crank sensor, or tps, the sensors it uses for comparison. Tapping on these may lead to a solution. Ray

Here is the circuit description.
The camshaft position (CMP) sensor correlates the crankshaft to camshaft position so that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can determine which cylinder is ready to be fueled by the injector. The CMP sensor also determines which cylinder is misfiring when a misfire is present. If the PCM receives an intermittent signal from the CMP, then the CMP Resync Counter will increment. When the PCM cannot use the information from the CMP sensor, a DTC is set and the PCM will fuel the engine by using the alternating synchronous double fire (ASDF) method.

But first things first, what year, make, model and engine size is the vehicle in question...although the circuit description is the same for just about all GM cars, there is some important information we need to know to give you good solid ideas on what to look for.
Basically the cam sensors recieves power and ground from the PCM and sends the PCM a signal back...any problems with wire integrity will turn on the SES light as will a faulty PCM
