Unhappy Why is it so hard to SHIFT GEARS?

On my old 85 celica, it is difficult to switch gears, on all my other friend's cars, it switches like butter (some of them are '87 '89), Someone told me i need to replace the clutch or manual transmission fluid (something like that). Could this be the reason for difficulty in engaging gears. Thanks for you help

The first thing you should check is to be sure the clutch completely disengages the engine from the transmission. Then check to be sure the transmission oil level is correct. After verifying that, you need to align the shift linkage. Then, change the transmission oil if it slill does it...

Re: Why is it so hard to SHIFT GEARS?

I agree w/ CraigFL but I have a couple questions. When you say it is hard, do you mean that the entire movement of the shift lever is difficult, or just when you actually begin to engage the gears?

It moves around freely in neutral, but when i start to go into a gear, its hard to push it all the way in. Once in a while ( i dunno why this happens) it becomes easy to go into first, i can push it without too much effort.

I dont know much about Celica's, but my truck had the same problem and it was because the hydraulic clutch fluid was out and i had air in the lines.

Re: Why is it so hard to SHIFT GEARS?

you could try bleeding the cluch or adjusting it. i got a 82 celica and it did the same thing. there should be a what they would call a slave cylinder on the side of your transmission. on the passenger side. you made have to jack the car up. if your not sure than have someone pump the clucth petal, you'll see it move in and out. that the slave cylider (clutch) there should be a bleeder valve. have someone pump it and hold it down, than you open the valve and close it. fluid should be all over the place rite about now. just like bleeding your brake.

adjusting your clutch petal; inside the car where your clutch petal is at. above it is a rod that is connect to your petal. there is two but sometime just one nut on that rod. loosen the nut and turn the rod outward away from you.

i hope this helps

i think they make bleeder kits with hoses so you don't have hydralic fluid all over place (which is carcinigenic and just plain nasty).
