1989 325is Purchase

I think I might bite the bullet and purchase a 1989 325is 2 door for my son. It has 224,000 on the odo and just had a head replaced. Body is faded and rear spoiler is cracking. Front seats are a little rough.
Doesn't burn oil. I think i can get for between $1,200 & $1,800.
What makes these 325 is so desireable? What differences do they have over the 325e model.
Any help ?

P.S. Long time MB forum user 300e for 6 years. did all my maintenace.
