Question anti-lock brake issue

hello all...

I have a 92 Maxima SE, manual, 90,000 miles, great car....
Recently my abs system started to leak and my brake pressure sucks.

The dealership says around $1300 for a new system. I was wondering
if it is possible to bypass the abs? (older cars didn't have anti-lock brakes right?)

I'm working the same issue right now on an '89 Maxima. Does anyone know if T fittings can be used to bypass the abs unit (one t fitting for each of 2 input lines and corresponding pair of output lines) ?, or would this cause other problems ?

thanks !

abs unit

yeah, i think all the nissans with the early abs systems had problems. i just replaced the abs pump in my 240. It had a crack in the tube below the bleeder screw. ABS units are non-servicable but i got one at the boneyard for 100 bucks. Its not hard to replace as long as you have the proper tools and some patients. Just make sure you use a flare end wrench to loosen all the fittings otherwise you can really screw up the lines and be sure to bleed the brakes after you do. Im not sure of the proper bleeding procedure but i did mine as follows:

-fill the master with dot3 fluid
-bleed the ABS unit first cause you just installed it (the 2 nipples on the top are the bleed screws
-bleed the wheels starting with the one farthest from the unit (IE left rear, right rear, left front, right front)
-rebleed the abs unit just to make absolutly sure.
-if your pedal is still spongy, do it again and make sure all your fittings are secure

good luck
