We just purchased an '86 Camaro IROC Z-28 with a broken fuel gauge. It's been running fine, but we didn't know how much gas it had in it, and today it ran out. We filled it back up, but now it won't crank. It doesn't smell flooded; in fact it seems like it's getting no gas at all. Could the fuel delivery system have been affected by it running dry?

It should still crank with or without the gas. I think your problem is elsewhere. Does it have any power at all? Like does the stereo work. If not, you may want to check the Batterie(maybe get a new one).

well from my experience, usually when you run your car dry out of gas, its definatly not good for the fuel pump, and on older cars itll usually damage them to were they wont work. As far as your car not cranking over, check the battery connections and check with a check lite were theres power. Maby theres a short somwere too ya never know.

Once you get it cranking and it still doesn't start. I would change the fuel pump. Most GM Fuel Injected cars out of the 80's have fuel pumps that die.

I think he means it won't turn over on it's own. If it's carbureted, pour a little gas into the carb to get the juices flowing a bit. If it's injected, then it's probably your fuel pump.

oh my bad...What can I say I drive a buick my vision must be going bad. (kinda like all of the other 70 year old people who drive them
)the pouring the gas down the carb will work for the TBI cars as well.

Re: '86 IROC ran out of gas, now won't crank.
Thanks for the suggestions. It's a TPI, 305 and the problem does seem to be the in-tank fuel pump: With the ignition on, there's no 'sound' from the tank. Fuse is fine, so replacing the fuel pump seems to be the next logical step. Thanks for the help all.
