Question lifter ticking in 2001 2500HD

I am considering buying a 2001 Silverado 2500HD with 59,000 miles. I know the owner and the service history and this is not a work truck.

I have a concern re: lifter ticking. I heard this engine (6.0L gas) has a problem with the lifters that GM/Chevy will not acknowledge. While under warranty, the dealer informed my buddy that there was nothing they could do and that it was not a problem.

I am concerned that this will turn into an expensive problem down the road, even though this will not be a true work truck for me.
Any knowledge of such a problem? Any thoughts about long term problems or recommended fixes much appreciated!

Re: lifter ticking in 2001 2500HD

Jake, I have an '01 2500 HD 4 door 6.0L with 114,000 miles on it. The octane knock/piston slap has been there since day 1. Chevy reprogrammed the comp 5 times and it still knocks. They do admit it and there does not seem to be any significant decline in power or increase in oil consumption. The nice thing is that the truck is well built, period. I installed aftermarket shocks to smooth the ride a bit and still have the original factory brakes. I tow quite a bit with it and that is the only time I wish I opted for the 8.0. Advice for ride, adjust the tire pressure to your load. I run Michelins at 42lbs unloaded and 70-80lbs loaded.

mabe the cold engine noise is coming from the oil pump pick up tube o-ring, there is a service bulletin to fix this, sounds like the lifters are rattling due to oil pressure has bleed down due to leaking o-ring
