compression check

whats up guys? i just ran a compression check on a 95 eclipse gst. starting from the number 1, i got 161,161,169, And 180. my question is, do these numbers look good? thats a big jump between number1 and number 4 cylinders. im expecting a bent valve or something because when i rev it up, it sounds like the piston and valve are pinging together. thanks in advance.

The 161s seem a bit low, the 169 is average, and the 180 is good for a 2g motor. Were the numbers dropping as you went along? ITs common for the battery to get lower and lower with each cylinder. Try testing again starting at the other end. Is the high cylindewr full of oil?

If you have a bent valve or anything substantial, you would be lucky to see compression over 100. Its usually 0...

well, i tried it again and now 1,3,and 4 seem fine but number 2 has 90 p.s.i. i just changed the head gasket on this thing and torqued everything to specs last week. i found out yesterday that he had turned the boost up backyard style; if you know what i mean. anyway when i rev the motor you can hear a slight pinging noise at the top of the motor. any suggestions? thanks

the pinging noise that you hear could be valve lash, when your lifter isnt gapped correctly between the lifter and your valve...i would make sure all your lifters are gapped correctly before goin and taking off the head again!!

the car has hydrolic valve lash adjusters. (if that sounds right) i dont how how i would adjust them. also, im not sure what octane he is running, but im pretty sure its 93. the pinging isnt a constant noise like valves being out of adjustment, its a piercing knock coming from the top end. almost like its out of time and the valve is hitting the piston. it sound like its coming from the number 2 cylinder. i dont know guys, im stumped

Re: compression check

There is NO adjustment in the lifters, because they are hydraulic.

Do a leakdown test and confirm where the loss of compression is coming from.
