97+ gt/gtp what's the difference

thinking about buying 97+ and want to make it fast. what's the difference , and what's the safest way to make it very fast!

The GT model has only the 3800 series motor. The GTP has that motor along with a supercharger. That gives it a good boost in horsepower. There are many ways to keep adding horsepower to your car. Simple ones are changing the intake and exhaust. Be careful of what things you do to your car, some mods may need upgraded internals also.

The GTP comes factory with around 240 horsepower. I've been told the normally aspirated 3800 has anywhere from 200 to 210 horsepower factory. Changing your intake and exhaust, smaller supercharger pulley, PCM swap...those are just a few of the things you can do.

I would suggest buying a 98+ and not a 97, 97 are from what I understand they are prone to mishaps and alot of problems since they were the first year for that body style, trans and engine.

Actually, I'd suggest going with a 99 (<-best year ) or newer. The 98s still were prone to most of the problems that the 97s suffered from. The 98s also had the older style engine compartments.

The fastest way to make a GTP faster is to add a CAI or FWI and a 3.4" pulley. If you want to go with a smaller pulley, you MUST mod the car more first. An auto-tap is also a must....to monitor KR levels, as well as many other things.

Most of the differences were already listed in this thread. Everything except for the insruance costs...which kept me from getting a GTP. Speed is what the TGP is for

I've never had any problems out of my '97...well, aside from the two recalls on it, which at least one of, if I'm not mistaken, affected up to a 2000 model, and that was the lower steering bearing in the rack & pinion, but it also wasn't only on the GP's.

And the insurance on my GTP isn't that high...$45/month.

Actually..that steering rack recall only hit 97 and 98 GPs. The only recall the 99s have on them is an Air bag recall. I know..I've checked

97 - 98 year models the GTP was considered a option package and not a seperate vehicle. So no diff in Ins. between GT and GTP's

I'd agree that the 99 would be the best starting platform.
Better :

• Throttlebodies

• still possible to get digital climate control

• different alt. bracketing

• coolant bottle already on strut tower

• decent flowing stock airbox

• Integrated radio(rearglass) antenna

That's all I can think of.

I LIVE IN NEBRASKA, and the difference on a GT and a GTP is $50 every six months. It is $200 for the GT and $250 for the GTP.

The GTPs from 97-98 were GTs that had the "P" (Performance) package, so it would make sense that there WOULD be a difference. I've heard it range anywhere from $5 to $100 depending on the insurance company.
