Stupid 5.0's!!

Kind of an old story but oh well.

I'm coming home from school one day around 4:00pm and I exit to Automall Pkwy. Which is basically straight for 2+ miles after the offramp from I-880. Exiting the freeway, I notice this green vehicle, looked kinda boxy, and it was tailing me really close. I was thinking, "Weakass fox-bodied mustang."

So I pull up to the red light, and when It changes, I launch HARD to shake him off. I take it up to about 80 mph and then let off thinking that he's gone. Lo and Behold, I check my rear view to see he's still riding my ass!!

He changes lanes to pass me, and I just floor it. I dont even give him the chance to line up with me evenly. From 80 mph, the car downshifts, and I hear this slightly muffled V8 roar from behind me, pull up to me, and proceed to blow me off from an 85 mph roll!! I took it up to about 115, and I wasn't even close to him.

We both slow down to turn right, and I change lanes to get a look at this guy who just owned me. He looks over, smiles, and roars away. I dont even bother to follow, and I go home, defeated.

Now, I look twice when I see a 5.0, I guess mustangs earned my respect. Never knew that Mustangs had that much oomph in their top-end.

prolly had the stock rear end, usaully is pretty low, if it had 2.79s with 1:1 gear, and 26 inch tires is can do 160+ (at 6k rpm)

just the sterotypical muscle car has no top end because it has a high rear end ratio, like 4.10... hell on acceraction, but a granny on the top end

Re: Stupid 5.0's!!

I have 3.73's and I my car still pulls hard up to 120 mph, which is the fasted I have been. My power band starts around 3500 rpms, so at highway speeds it reacts well.

Yeah, my stang takes off pretty slow. But i guess because of the gear....but when i hit 4,000 rpms in 3rd it takes off. I was playing w/ a 94 z28 camaro and he couldnt get around me at 100+ mph and that car is supposed the be a top end car. (btw he wasnt messing with me i talked to him after that and he said he had it pegged.) Mustangs rule!

Here is the beauty of a Mustang, they can be set up for almost anything, they are very versatile.

Good story.

I wish I can go scoot around in my 5.0 right now.. but I'm at work.. and she's been parked due to the need for a new adjustable clutch cable quadrant.

#2 So much for "The Camaro is out...", I found one which is tuned to handle the heat and its 1995 for 2.5K, its not my final decision though.
#3 Camaro is out, someone bought it before me.
#4 Found a 300ZX 1986 in good condition for 2400, will take it for a check up on thursday.

I have a 1991 LX 5.0 with 3:55 rear gears and I have been over 130 in it, it still had a lot of RPM and pedal left, I backed off did not want to test the extreme, I guess I am just getting old, but it was a blast...

Re: Stupid 5.0's!!

To Start with, the older stangs don't weight nearly as much as the camaro. And the pony's weight distrub front to back is set perfect. The 80's and early 90's 5.0 pony's rule! I don't know much about the new one's, so I can't say anything about them except that I DON'T like the 4.6L they put in them.

My best friend has the 97' special edition with the 4.6L in it and we run my wife in her 98' sunfire. We couldn't get rid of her, she took off ahead of us and then drop back right at his door handle until his stang top out at 110 mph then she left us. His 90' 5.0 that he traded, blew her sunfire away needless to say.

It sounds like you have one hell of a machine there. In another thread, you claimed an 11.57 1/4 mile. That would be around 115-120 mph through the trap, I guess.

I'm currently converting my 4-banger 'Stang to a 5.0. Tomorrow (well, later today, I guess), I'll finally finish installing a 3.55 Turbo Coupe rear-end on my car. Don't take this the wrong way, but here you have 3.55 gears, in other threads you have 3.73 gears. Just for the sake of clarity, which is it? I hope you're not offended by me pointing this out. Its just that it's easy to claim anything in a forum. Seemingly insignificant errors like this sometimes throw flags in my mind, that's all.

I have pegged the speedo and still gained 1000rpms.....still pulling hard but ran out of road. I guess it at about 170mph. She floats a little, but I don't like the cobra r wing so I guess I'll leave it alone.
