Jetta III 95 Auto Tranny Only drives in 3rd...

At first the car would go through all the gears like normal but then it would hit 4th and would go into a neutral like state and then it would go back to 3rd. And then that happened for the last time because now it just stays on 3rd from the begining of the ride. Any ideas out there.

my 94 gls III will not go into third, intermitedly, it just revs higher and higher, then finally clunks into third (at 55mph).
I need some guidence.

ok i told voice print check his mount and for u i cant think of what its called right now but automatics have something kinda like a clutch maybe the 2 of u should check that out when i can remember the name of it i will let u know but thats about the only things i can think of off the top of my head

It is going into limp mode due to an electronic failure (you should have first if you manually put the selector in low). You need to read the codes, I just posted directions on how to read them (w/o a scanner) on the "check engine light" thread in this forum.
