97 PU engine rattling

When I start my engine - all sounds great as well as when I shut down. When it warms up, and i accelerate, I get a rattling noise..... also after its been warmed up, anytime I accel - it rattles until I back off or level out in speed... I tried higher octaine gas... helped a little but still a little rattle. I have not put in High Octraine - only the mid line fuel....

Any help on this ???

how many miles does the truck have its probaly your timeing chain puting higher octane gass is only makeing a bigger boom than the rattle its slef with the engine shut off not started if you do this with the engine started you will lose a finger open the oil cap use your finger to find the timing chain and gear try moveing the chain real fast if the chain moves replace it or don't it'll go about 160,000 miles before breacking or longer

Re: 97 PU engine rattling

My 97 clancked (30,000mi.) at start up due to timing chain tensioner recall (supposedly). Quit for a while but 20,000 mi. later it still rattles. Runs fine otherwise. This is my second 97 and I also have a 86.5. Its the only one thats ever done it.

FYI, My 97 is doing the same thing, this is the second engine that I have placed in my truck. The first time I did not get it fixed and I blew the engine. Looks like this one I may have done the same thing.. This is the only vehicle I have ever had so much trouble with. I have it in the shop getting diagnosed but I am sure its something to do with the timing chain.

My recomendation, once the truck is running good sell it.. Once I get mine running right again than that is what I am doing. Especially now looking at these forum's (I thought it was just my luck)

Re: 97 PU engine rattling

Read my 300z swap idea on the other thread. That is my cure. The engine has been babyied all its life There shouldn't be any internal problems but, who knows. Its an automatic so it needs junked anyway.
