coolant loss

My wife has a 2003 X5 with the 3.0. After 12K miles the engine has lossed/ used enough coolant for the computer to indicate low coolant level. Is this normal for this engine?

Thanks

i have been told that this is normal. However i have a 2002 X5 4.4 and have had coolant trouble form the first month of ownership. We bought the car and a few weeks later the coolant light came on, i took it in for service and they filled up the coolant and told me that it is normal because BMWs run hotter than other cars (performance reasons), therefore burning more coolant. This same thing has happened two more times. Just two weeks ago the coolant light came on again while i was going to the store, i pulled in the parking lot and left the car running (because i was just returning a video), when i turned back towards the car it was covered in a cloub of steam, you seriously couldnt even see the car. I ran to the car and shut it off, and BMW sent a tow truck to take the car to the dealer. They told me that the radiator hose blew and that the thermostat got hung up. However the car did not overheat in any manner. So this was my experience, maybe my coolant problems werent related to the radiator, but if they were you might need a new thermostat also.
