I have a buick sedan that I drove through some water tonight....
It was not more than 6 inches of water at most, but after I got through it, the brakes didnt work very well. When I got home (like 5 mins later) I smelled a burning smell and smoke was coming out of the hood. No engine lights were on and the temp. gauge was in the middle. What do you think happened, is it major and what will it cost to fix? thanks! |

Re: drove car through water
you probabaly splashed water onto the exhaust manifold, or the brake rotors.

Re: drove car through water
You should be fine, but the cool water on an engine block could have caused a crack in the exhaust manifold, or worse, the block. There is something I read about that you could spray on the engine, and it wouldmake the cracks glow, but someone else will have to tell you about that. If it runs fine, then consider yourself lucky.

the stuff that you spray on the block is made by mangaflux. We use it at Caterpillar alot to inspect wields for cracks. It glowes under a black light. It's pretty cool. Ill get the actual name of the stuff tommrow.

mangaflux makes the product but it is called something elese. Mangnafluxing is when you magnatize a piece of metal and brush Iron powder on the metal. The powder goes to the cracks and reveals them. Here is how it works. When you magnatize the metal, the whole piece of metal is like a magnet. When there is a crack the two ridges of the crack become opposite charges. and attracts the powdered Iron to the crack. If you ever get a chance to see the process check it out I think it is pretty amazing.

Re: drove car through water
I remember seeing it in a school textbook or something, it showed a crack glowing an amber/orange color.

Re: drove car through water
if it runs as good as always, with no problems, then your probably alright.
