ignition dilema

Has ne1 here got the jacobs ignition. heard really good things bout it but it is pricey so i wanted a few opinions before i decided on gettin it:smoka:

IMHO, MSD 6A is your best bang for the buck. Jacobs has somewhat of a bad rep in domestic circles, and although the import stuff seems to work better, I really don't see it as any better than the much cheaper MSD box. If you want all the bells and whistles, the Crane DMSI ( http://www.cranecams.com/whatsnew/digmulti.htm ) is a great box. Whichever you choose, make sure to use their reccomended coil too.

Also note that the OEM honda igniton is fantastic. There really is no reason for an aftermarket upgrade unless you're running forced induction or spinning above 9000 rpm. (And even then, the stock ignition would probably still do fine.)

well i'm running n2o and want to retard the timing. are there other ways i could do this from the drivers seat.:bandit:

Probably the best way would be to use a Crane HI-6S ignition (~$140), it's a nice CD ignition with a retard feature built right in. This gives you a wire to hook to your nitrous solenoid and will automatically retard your timing an adjustable amount (via plug-in modules) whenever you're on the juice.

Just for contrast, the full-on bells & whistles approach would be the Holley Annihilator ICT system (~$700). This gives you so much adjustability it's not even funny. You can even adjust the timing to individual cylinders!

AFAIK, the Nitrous Mastermind does not have timing retard. The Jacobs Opto Timer does, but at ~$150 + the Jacob's ignition at ~$350 - it gets pretty expensive.

MSD also has a two-box solution, the MSD 6A (~$130) + the MSD "Start/Retard" control (~$120). Cheaper and MSD quality.

But the Crane HI-6S has all that in one for just ~$140.

Multi-spark inductive discharge, rev-limiter, and adjustable retard (either one-step fixed for nitrous, or continuous with a MAP sensor for boost!)

Or you could upgrade to Crane's top of the line HI-6TRC for ~$300. It has a bunch more features, including capacitive discharge, a much higher output rating, under-dash retard dial adjustment, sequential rev-limiting, etc...

Still a lot cheaper than even the base Jacobs unit, and a whole lot more functionality. Honestly, this would probably be my personal choice, it's got the best price/performance point by far. For this one, go with a Crane LX92 coil (~$60).
