Merging gone wrong

Ok.... It was 5pm sat night and I was leaving work to go home with my friend following right behind me. I'm ahead of him by about three car lengths and we get onto the on ramp to the freeway. The on ramp is an S configuration and always no problem to drive on except this time. While going on it at about 60mph (cuz gotta merge) at the out part of the turn my rear tires give out first. I'm driving a 95 civic with a lot of mods, but dont want to get into that part right now b/c its off subject. Well anyway the rear tires gave out like a rear wheel drive would. I quickly let off the accelerator (B/C your always supposed to accelerate out of a turn for better traction) get on the brakes a lil bit but the back end kept coming around like there was oil on the tires. So than when I realized that there was no possible chance to save it cuz the car wasn't coming back around, I locked up the brakes and headed off the into the right shoulder into the dirt. Still sideways Sliding through the dirt at around 50mph or less the car catches something in the dirt like some rocks and than a bigger rock which practically ripped off my rear section of my exhaust off the mid pipe. And it wasn't the bolts that broke but the welds on the ends where the bolts go through to connect the rear section to the mid pipe. Crazy experience but also a learning experience for me. Just wanted to tell everyone the experience I had the other night and to remember and be ready for anything that might happen. My only conclusion is that the rain from the previous night brought up the oil and that it was still a lil wet and I just got the bad part of it. The roads were dry that night I left too. My friend behind said he thought I was drifting on purpose at first but I would never think of drifting in any fwd car. Enjoy for reading pleasures, any comments are fine.

sorry to hear about your misshap but you did exactly the wrong thing...when the rear tires give up firts and you oversteer don't hit your brakes because you'll transfer even more of the weight to the front and your rear tires will lose even more traction.

Neutrino is right... if the rear end is coming around on you even letting off the gas could make it worse. When you accelerate the front end of the car is trying to go up. This settles the weight to the rear and makes it squat down. When you get on the brakes the front end dives and the rear goes up. It makes a very big difference in times like this. Letting off the gas and hitting the brake is a very common reaction and unfortunately, the wrong reaction.

Rear drift, more gas.
Front drift, less gas, possibly slight braking.

lol... I have never played any of those games... learn from real racing, its the only way to go!!

I actually learned some driving techniques from the first gran turismo like weight shifting and its direct effects on tire traction.

Yeah, GT3 helped me to become more confident with what I thought was the right idea when drifting and what not. Never thought it would work like in the game till it happened to me... Thank you Gran Turismo!

Yeah dude you should probably autocross at least half a dozen times, if you've got mods that will snap your rear out like that. Even if you knew that you had to gas instead of brake, without practice you probably owuldn't have done it. It takes time to overcome your reflexes.
