I have a 91 Explorer. Have the front end checked out. Ball Joints on a 4WD can be expensive I have found out. Also look for major oil leaks.

Concered about ..

I own a '93 for about the last (95K bought - 150K now)three years here is what I have had to fix:

4wd. the engaging motor burned out. Jonh's 4x4 told me this part is designed this way. looking aroung, this is true. You can rework the motor if you want or buy a new one. I didn't have the time so I bought a new one, < $500

Clutch. This fails after about 85-100K have this checked. ~1100

Oils. ALL (clutch, trans, axels) Replaced when purchesed, need that now. transaxles can leak look for excessive wear. ~1000 plus inspection. I didn't have a level place to do this, which makes drainging and filling hard, otherwise I would have done it.

Mass Air Inflow sensor. Most Fords use this for the fuel injection. when not working it knocks under light loads, can be pricey for a small part! ~400

When having my rotors replaced, I had trouble removing the wheel barring nut, the mentioed the srear slaves were leaking. not a problem so I had them fixed. Left uncheked it could have fored me to replace the axles, the whole axle. ~200 labor

My transmission sticks too, no understanding why.

HTH

If you buy a vehicle cheap enough its a good deal or so I thought.
I purchased my 91 Explorer XLT with 142K on it for $1600 the body had no rust and inside was excellent! It has all the options you could get! Everyone commented on the great deal I got! It had 4 new tires! The back ones where worn on the edge. Chopped. (3 out of 4 where no good) this caused a vibration at 60mph. one had a broken belt.
So far I have put almost 1400$ into it for repairs. And owned it for 4 months! $500 for ball joints and a used axle. 400$ for 4 new tires and alignment. New mufler, resonator and tail pipe 175$ and a new 4WD actuator motor 100$, Throtle position sensor, and many other numerous repairs! I now have a 3,000$ Explorer that I would be lucky to get 1900$ for. Be carefull have it checked over by a good mechanic! Dont buy a vehicle just because it looks good!
