Life is not like Gran Turismo.

You can go to track days (where you can drive your car around a track with others. There are very strict rules to follow, so it stays fun, no competetive).
If you want to race in a real series, just call up the, SCCA and they should have a class for you, or help you find one. Explore the site, it is very helpful.

OK, the real story

To get your SCCA regional license, here is what you must do:

1) physical exam including vision
2) join the SCCA
3) pay for your novice permit
4) attend 2 SCCA schools (and be signed off by the chief steward)
5) race in two regional races (and be signed off by the chief steward)
6) send your novice permit to the SCCA with the fees to obtain your regional license.

IIRC the cost to join the SCCA is $60 (I should know this since I have to send in my renewal this week).

The cost of the novice permit is somewhere around $50 (again, I should know this).

The physical exam is between you, your doctor, and your insurance company.

The SCCA schools are roughtly $125 give or take.

The regional race entry fees are $125 give or take.

The regional license fee is something like $50.

Along the way you will have to acquire a car, either by buying or renting (renting is much easier for the beginner). If you are renting, you will likely have to pay for consumables as well, such as tires, brakes, etc.

You will need a SFI rated suit, and depending upon the rating, you may need Nomex underwear as well. You will also need Nomex gloves and a Snell SA95 or newer rated helmet. You may be able to rent the gear as well.

Another alternative is to attend an SCCA certified commercial school with a licensing program. See the SCCA website for more info.

Can you help me get one Scott. I could be one of your crew members. I know I wouldn't run a gun, but maybe a jack.
