Question Transmission Swap

Please help
I recently purchased a 91 honda civic Dx with stock motor and 4speed tranny. My tranny blew out so i decided to buy a used JDM replacement. No one had the 4speed but everyone had the 5speed and told me it was a direct bolt on with no modification. Aftert eh mechanic installed it i was shocked to find out that my stock axels no longer mated to the new tranny. I went back to the tranny guy and he gave me the correct axels to fit into the tranny. The only problem now is that the shaft is much larger than my original shafts and now the new axles cant be mounted. Is there anything I can do to get rid if this problem? I am on an extremely tight budget and am hoping that i can get axles that fit my stock hubs and knucles and mate to the tranny at the same time. If not do i have to but all new axels ,knuckles, and hubs for this to work? Please someonehelp Im dieing here

Re: Transmission Swap

I don't know what your mechanic is talking about the axels from the 4speed fit the 5speed you just have to swap out the tulips. (the part that goes into the tranny that the axle slides into.) These should pop out fairly easy with a Straight edge screw driver -. I'm using the axles from my 4speed in my 5speed right now and haven't had any problems. Oh and the 4speed models are STD not DX.

I don't know if they are realy called Tulip's or not thats just what i call them, because they resemble one. This is the part that the axle's 3 bearings slide into that the boot clamps onto. There is one sticking out each side of the Transaxle, if you put a flathead screw driver betweet the "Tulip" and the transaxle case and attempt to pry the tulip outwards it should pop out. It may take a little bit of force but it will come out and not be damaged. Then take your original tulips from the 4speed and stick them in the holes. They will go in just turn them till they do. You have to drain the fluid to pull the tulips out. You must also us a DX or SI clutch assembly and flywheel because the imput shaft that goes from the tranny through the clutch to the motor has a different # of splines. Your mechanic should know this if he is worth a sh!t. If you have anymore questions just ask i did the whole swap fairly quick except for it being labor day and not being able to get the clutch kit till the next day.
