After I got my car serviced (new a/c compressor, tightening of door panels), my electric roof wouldn't work. On pressing the roof-operation switch, the windows would part-lower (as usual), but roof won't lift.
I took the car back to the mechanic who 'serviced' it. After checking, he said a control box, part no. 6135 8378 795 was faulty. But since his re-check, the part-lowering of windows has also stopped, and sometimes the boot doesn’t open...just makes a whirring noise on turning the key. The mechanic says it'll cost US$1000 to fix it. But after the windows and boot bit, I'm wary of his competence/integrity. What should I do? Many thanks. Arvind Nangia |

The bmw conv tops are notorious for breaking, and more notorious for their difficulty in being fixed. Mine is messed up and I just gave up on it, probably gonna convert it to manual latching instead of automatic, cause i've had it with the stupid thing. Only suggestion is not to take it to any old mechanic. Conv tops require a skilled mech who knows what he's doing, otherwise they'll just keep asking you for money. Try a BMW service center, or a shop that specializes in convertible tops. Best place to check: call up some auto glass repair shops and find out who they deal with when they need to fix conv tops. Good luck.
