'99 'Burb 6.5 diesel...Strange noise near Turbo

A few days ago, I started my 99 K2500 Suburban 6.5 TD (103,000 carefully maintained miles) and felt a peculiar "vibration" and a noise that I've never heard before. I opened hood, noise seemed to be worse near the Turbo. When I shut the truck off, it makes a metallic "clanking" noise ( I thought, Great, the turbo AND my crankshaft).
After getting it straight home, a friend noticed that the Harmonic balancer Pulley was loose (you could move the serpentine belt an inch or so either way).
Would the Harmonic Balancer make such an awful "Clunk" when the truck is shut down, and would the noise (almost sounds like rough bearings) travel as far as the Turbo Area?

HELP!!!

PROBLEM SOLVED!
The 6.5 diesel's crankshaft pulley (attached to the harmonic balancer) also has a rubber dampener. The bolts that attach it to the balancer were hitting the pulley when It was shut off. (sounded like my engine was coming apart!)
I replaced both the Harmonic Balancer & the Crank Pulley (along with a new front oil seal). Now I'm back to the normal everyday clattering of my Diesel!

VCS,

Just read your post. I'm glad you got it figured out. I took mine to the mechanic who changed the A/C compressor, alternator and another engine pulley before he figured it out. Cost me a pretty penny. I cut a deal with him so we both lost out. It's definitely tough to identify the source with the engine running. It sounded like it was an A/C issue because when I turned the A/C off and on it increased the sound. Just the additional load. Lesson learned.

Yes, they go bad often, good thing you replaced the harmonic balancer as they go and you can break the crankshaft ruining the engine, its more common on this engine than you'd think.
