Undersize Studio 27 decals?

Maybe I'm just unlucky but for the second time in a row I've struck issues with Studio 27 decals being undersize. Both for the real car they are supposed to represent and for the model kit they are supposed to be designed for.

Most recent problem was the Mika Hakkinen Lancer where the window top graphics were too narrow, as well as most of the decals noticeably smaller than they should be compared to photos of the real car on stage. Now I've just bought decals for the '81 Monte winning Lancia Stratos and found the big "L'Automobile Magazine" decal on the bonnet only covers about 2/3rds the area it should

Have any other racing and rally car builders noticed this with S27? Are the above examples a bad coincidence or part of a trend?

Phil,

I haven't used any St 27 decals to answer the question, but you have me wondering something.

St 27 use more than one decal manufacturer, I know the Lapland Rally ones are printed by Umi Graphics, who are the Stratos decals printed by.

You have me worried about my Possum decals now......

Lately S27 have been using Cartograph to print their decals, don't know who they used before. The 'C' at the end of the stock number indicates a Cartograph printed decal. UMI Graphics do the artwork, both for the Lancer and the 81 Corsica Stratos (wrote Monte above, ment Corsica - doh!)

I guess if the decals are undersize it could be either UMI got it wrong or somehow the overall dimensions were mucked up between designer and printer?

Which Possum Bourne decals do you have? I'm not convinced the colours are right on the S27 2002 Oz rally decals.

The Possum decals I have are for the 1999 Rally New Zealand, at first glance they seem to be pretty good for color and size, the decals are Umi Graphics ones.

I can't see Mike would have got them wrong, or at least hope Mike didn't.

Hum, hum,
the only ref pic i have is the one in World Rally Collection Issue 1 and the car was the number 10 from Corsica, All the logo size on bonnet are wrong not only "L'AUTOMOBILE...', TOTAL & CHARDONNET too... the rally plates must cover a part of the Chardonnet Logo...

But i have no pics of the Monte Carlo Number 4... perhaps on that car logo are reduce like design on the decal...that can explain the fault...but i agree bad point for umi/mike. Perhaps you can ask him ?

Is the yellow flourescent on the '99 NZ sheet? The '02 Oz sheet is a very orangey yellow. Doesn't look right to me, although I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Don't know if I'd put the blame on Mike for all of it. The printer was definitely at fault with the silver on silver problem I had with the Hakkinen Lancer.

You're right Seb, you must have that sheet too? The more you look into it the more you see wrong I will have to give Mike the benifit of the doubt in some areas, since I have three seperate photos of the car on the event in question and they are all very different. Looks like the sponsor and rally graphics were repositioned for every leg! Still, certain things are constants throughout the references and clearly incorrect on the decal sheet.

Maybe I'll have to build the black number 4 car from the '81 Monte. I have no references from that event so the S27 decals could be right!

I think you can ask mike for his reference.

Yeah, on the 1999 NZ sheet the yellow sections are definitely fluorescent, if your '02 sheet is an Orangy Yellow it sounds wrong to me.

I will see what I can find for reference to confirm our suspicions though.

BTW, is that the sheet for the Group N Impreza?

Re: Re: Re: Undersize Studio 27 decals

Yes Ray the sheet covers several different cars both Group N and A.

Seb, the actual decal sheet isn't as bad at the placement sheet. The decals are about half way between the drawing and where they should be. I'm a bit hesitant to email Mike about the errors, seems I bug him every time! I just remembered I also had a problem with my Sweden 2001 Peugeot that I asked him about.

Might just press on with the 81 Corsica car and live with the inacuracy. I'm going to have to take a few guesses regards the interior and engine so the decals are probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Still the original question still stands, does S27, Cartograf or UMI make undersize decals all the time or just the ones I buy?
