Lift gate lock broke
Hey all. I am posting a question for my Mom. She has a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The lift gate lock makes a high pitched grinding sound when the lock is activated to either lock or unlock. The liftgate works most of the time but sometimes the lock remains locked intermintenly. When it makes no sound at all the lock does not function but we dont know if the motor is still turning because the sound of the other door locks drowds out the sound. The problem was fixed by a dealership a few times while it was still under warrenty, but the problem has returned again. I was wondering what exactly was broken and how to get that part. Also I was wondering if anyone other that jeep made that replacement part... Like one that will last a bit longer!. Well anyways just shoot me with a respons if anything comes to your mind. THANKS! (PS. look for my post about the stock stereo tweeters *infinity gold*)

Lift Gate Door Lock
Your problem is the Power Door Lock Actuator. I have the same problem with my 2000. The real issue is that the factory part is a piece of garbage and is a common item to fail. I would suggest taking it to an aftermarket shop and finding another part that will perform the same function and fit, but use a different vendor. If I find out more on mine, I will let you know.

I think I got it now.
Hey guys,
Just to let you know. I ended up talking with a friend of mine at a Jeep dealer and he said that Chrysler used plastic gears in the actuators and they wore quickly causing this problem. I bought some new actuators from the dealer that have now been retooled to have a metal gear instead of the plastic one. They are dealer replacement parts but since they changed the gear material, they should last a lot longer. Mine have been in place for quite some time now and so far so good. Make sure to ask the parts guy to make sure you get the actuators with the metal gears. Good luck. |
