American Autobahn petition

Saw this online. Just passing information. I haven't formed an opinion about it yet.

Wait a second. Having somebody analyze your breath every 30 miles will increase tourism? Doesn't sound like the German autobahn I've driven on.

Ok, that petition doesn't make sense. If you're trying to reduce alcohol related accidents, then why would you need a "unlimited-speed toll highway" Don't they think accidents will increase when drunk people drive whatever speed they want? Plus, you don't need a "unlimited-speed toll highway" to have those 30-40 mile checks, they could just set them up on the current highways. For some reason, that whole petition doesn't have any valid points. Ok, I mean, if you want a "unlimited-speed toll highway" then that's fine, but how would that protect people from drunk drivers? It would take like at least half a minute to find out if someone has been drinking, having to change the mouthpiece for each person driving...Where are they gonna keep all the used mouthpieces? All that person is trying to do is go as fast as he wants. I'm for that actually, but he should have come up with some valid points as to why they should set up highways with no speed limits.

Actually I'd be against an unlimitied speed highway in the U.S. American driver's are already bad as it is, with being too lazy to user blinker (you hit a lever with your finger for the love of christ! How can you be too damn lazy to do it!!!) and already to distracted with cell phones, coffee etc. Outlaw stupid people, and then get rid of speed limits.

Wipe out 250+ million people and there won't be enough road users to worry about speed limits anyway

The U.S. should just start making getting a license as hard as it is in other countries like Germany and Japan. Then we could have increased speed limits.

speaking of the autobahn, i am in german III in school, and we had someone from germany come in and anwer some questions. One of my classmates asked if it was fun to drive on the autobahn being able to go as fast as you want. He said most people didnt drive too fast, plus now they are about to enstate a speed limit. i forget how fast though, i dont know if this is true, i just heard about it.

I think its stupid. I mean, I'd love to have an autobahn, but there are too many Americans that don't know how to drive and would kill themselves and others b/c they're careless. As for the Autobahn, from what I understand it has a speed limit, but it depends on traffic. As you're entering the autobahn there's a speed limit sign that lets you know what the max speed is at the time, and it can vary depending on how man cars there are. I don't think they would set one constant speed limit for it, b/c then it would no longer be the Autobahn, it would just be another highway.

What do they do in those countries?

Personally, I think this would be a bad idea. It would be cool and all, but no good could come from it. If your that determined to get somewhere fast, fly. If you can't afford a plane ticket, chances are you don't havea car fast enough to require a road with no speed limit.

I agree for the most part, getting a drivers license in this country is viewed as a right. ITS NOT AND NEVER SHOULD BE!

the only reason the Autobahn works is because German drivers are a different sort.
They have lane discipline
The understand what going at the speed they feel comfortable means
There are less drivers over there because the licenses are expensive and hard to get
They don't voluntarily distract themselves while driving

We don't take the physical act of driving seriously enough in this country, and should never have an autobahn here. We would not only have to make getting a license much harder but shift everybody's perception about driving.

*Note to self* Call the government and bitch them out because they give drivers licenses to anyone. And finish it with a F*@! YOU! and hang up.
I probably wouldn't say that last part though.

I take it you've never been to Saudi or some Asian third-world country have you?

I've seen 8-lanes of traffic packed in a 5-lane highway in some places. Never seen that in the US. Even L.A. rush-hour doesn't come close.

Very true. Wasn't really thinking of those countries.

The only thing is, despite the heavy uncoordinated mass of vehicles and the lack of speed limits or the lack of its enforcement, there is hardly any traffic accidents....why? because of stiff penalties for DUI drivers...some are publicly beaten/caned and humiliated.

and we third world drivers are used to that...imagine we face that crap traffic everyday....

LOL. I lived in the Philippines till I was 16, man. The reason why there's hardly any accidents is because traffic is barely crawling during rush hours.

Plus, the Jeepney drivers over there are freaking amazing at missing anything by inches. That's how 8 lanes of traffic can fit in a 5-lane freeway .

Besides, from what I remember, it's all about who has the loudest horn. You honk, and everybody that heard you better get out of the way, or it's their fault/ass .
