Question What Is Vtec???

ok i know i will sound stupid posting this question but i want to know exactly what vtec is. how is a vtec different than a regular honda motor? the reason i am wondering is because my brother is saying that it is something that kicks in at a certain rpm for more power. i dont believe this but it may be true. wat exaclty is vtec? wat does it do?

Actually your brother is correct. It's basically Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control. That's the jist of what it stands for. Forgot off the top of my head the exact techni9cal name of it, but that's pretty close enough. it basically is a 2nd cam profile on the camshaft that is like having 2 different cams in one engine. One profile is made for economy and around the city driving, and then usually around 4800 - 5200 RPM, the 2nd more aggressive cam profile moves into play and gives the motor some extra punch from that RPM point and up.

I think it's just your mind then. 4300 is way low for VTEC engaugement unless you're using a VTEC controller, and even then it's still a bit low. Also, unless you have an Si hatchback or a D16Z6 motor, then your car doesn't have VTEC built into it anyways.

Re: What Is Vtec???

When vtec engages in on my car it feels like a 25-30hp shot of nitrous and the engine starts roaring. From 0-6k rpm it's got almost nothing but a little bit of torque though, so imo without vtec Honda engines are hardly worth anything. On the sohc's, vtec just makes the engine sound a little meaner, but there's hardly anything noticable powerwise. These are my real-life experiences, not the technical jumbo read on the net.

Yes...and most honda series have a version of that engine w/ vtec not just the b-series. If all you want is vtec you could get a cheap d-series motor. The question is sort of broad though. What do you want exactly in power level and for what application.

I agree. I have a sohc vtec engine and while it sounds like its working hard the speedometer doesn't seem to be keeping pace...Damn I can't wait for an engine swap Good reliable engine but I want more...I deserve more...
