Legacy Purchase

I am about to buy a legacy and am trying to decide between a 1998, 1999 or 2000.

Was there a big difference between these years as far as reliability and should I pay the extra money for the 2000?

What year did the generations change?

I have a 98. I like it a lot. I haven't had any problems with it besides leaving the gas cap loose, which wasn't the car's fault. I can't comment very much on it because I haven't had it that long, nor can I comment on the newer ones as I haven't ridden in one or anything. Sorry I can't be much more help than that.

I really like my '95, but you may have trouble finding any with low miles. I've put about 40k on mine (total of 130k) and its still runnin smooth.
Either way, happy driving, Legacys (sp?) rock.

Sorry for the shameless plug here, but I thought I'd let you know
I have a 97 Legacy GT forsale. it's a black(mulberry) color, looks black but has a purple metalic haze to it in the right light. It's a sedan with the factory 16" wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, body skirting, power moonroof, has all the power options, dual airbags, 4-wheel antilock brakes...etc.....
the only options it did not come with from the factory were: cd player (aftermarket JVC installed now), leather interior, and automatic trans.
It is a 5-speed. The clutch is original to my knowledge, but still holds great.
it has 124k miles on it, I bought it in 99 w/ 88k, so in the 4 years i've owned it hasnt seen much driving, primarily use it for long trips I don't trust my beater on.
it has brand new, 1-2miles on them, brakes and rotors all the way around. and very recent alignment and tires also.

KBB.com values the car around $5700, and I think $4800 is fair since it does need some work

I have a 98GT auto I just hit 90k miles i've never had any problems,But
I think it could use some more braking power.

The model year 1999 Legacy was the 22C model. In April 1999 the production of the model year 2000 66L model was begun and it was on the dealer lots in June 1999.

This info is for Legacy's produced at SIA in Lafayette, IN USA. If you are refering to Japanese produced cars, Japan start of production was 1 year earlier than the U.S. This allows the production equipment was put in place and debugged before begining production in the U.S.

98-99 were the same body style. The only reliability problem would be the headgaskets on the 2.5L engines (came with the GT and outback, but the L got a 2.2, which is bulletproof)

2000 was an all new Legacy, Im not sure about the headgaskets on these ones though. FYI all the trim levels came with the 2.5L for this model year
