Angry 1995 LeSabre Speedometer

Have a 1995 LaSabre w/313,000 mi. all works well except the speedometer will Intermittingly "hang" at 55 MPH - ignition on or off! Sometime for several days then begin to work again. Pointer will not move either while driving or standing still. Have tried the "hammer" fix to no avail.

Any suggestions.

A hammer?...lol Hammers are not generally used to fix things. You could probably fetch a used "Working" speedometer at your wrecking yard for $75-100. But if you want to fix it, you have to know how it works. I am not too sure on the Buicks, but I have seen speedometers that are cable driven. They spin a rectangular magnet within a circular cup. The cup is connected to the needle and the spinning motion of the magnet rotates the cup corresponding to the speed.

So, it sounds like the needle is obstructed by something or since those are electronic, the motor could be worn outor something to that affect.
