350Z vs turbo Supra vs Me

well i got whooped, no biggie.
i was comin home from school and i saw a kid with a red late 90's supra(which i had thought to be NA) and so i lined up next to him at a light. i look behind me and see a red 350Z coming up behind me. the light went green and i pulled about a car and a half on the supra(had a real good launch) so i figured i had it in the bag but kept nailing it anyway, all i hear is this kids BOV and then a whirring noise next to me and he started pulling. he really didn't get that far ahead of me but considering he was 1-1/2 cars behind i must say he pulled pretty good.
so we line up again at another light and the 350Z, who's been tailing us the whole time, lines up too. when the light went green me and supra had pretty similar outcomes, he didn't launch well, but the 350z absolutely killed the supra. i was surprised considering a turbo supra makes 320bhp. had the kid been able to launch better he'd have taken me by 3-4 cars but he didn't have a snowball's chance in hell taking the Z.

BTW the supra had an exhaust, the z was stock and i have an intake. all 5 or 6 speeds.

Damn that's pretty impressive for the Z, I thought you had the 6 speed?
The reason I say that is because the Z in all the videos and all the time slips I've seen wasn't really that much faster than the 6 speed Max, could it have been that the Z was SC'd?

I don't know that is why I'm asking, you know that Stillen makes a nice SC for the Z that has 5.8psi boost, which means you're pushing about 320 to the wheels.

Good run though on the second launch.

this was a pretty exciting 2 minutes with a few surprises. i first expected to smoke the supra, but it was turbo. i really expected to get smoked the second time we lined up cuz i thought maybe the kid didn't know i wanted to race until i was mashing the pedal the first time, but i took him off the start. and the fact that the Z took him( and me) by so much really surprised me cuz the Z has a power disadvantage. i was thinking the Supra kid didn't drive very well or maybe his car needed some major tunage. he did have a white front bumper on a red car, looked like he was awaitng paint. maybe he got in an accident.

I do have the 6 spd, but i just don't know what was up with that Z. maybe SC, maybe N02. i figure i can drive stick pretty well considering i'm going into my 4th year driving stick on my 3rd 5(6) spd nissan. i wish i could come on here saying i left them both eating gravel, but i had fun regardless

Whether you win or not isn't the issue - make them respect the max!!!!

I have been told by the way that the z has a different 6 speed from the max - I don't know that for sure, but I will tell you one thing - if the max had a decent 6 speed on it it would be even faster still. A short throw BMW - like shifter would give you another half second from 0-60. The max 6 speed is like stirring a pot of rocks.

You're lucky, I never see any worthy cars to race where I am. I would love to race a car that I know can whip my ass. I just like to see where the Max stands compared to "Sport" cars. I've race non-turbo supra and 3000gt and they weren't competition. Hopefully some nice cars move into the area.

it's a rarity to catch a nice race like that. the last time i raced a car was a turbo eclipse(gst) that i walked by like 8 cars and that was the first week i got the car(in june) so it's been some time. there was another time but it's hard to call it a race. a kid was trying to keep on my ass and i just kept pulling away from him in 3d gear, then i'd let him catch up, and I"d do it again.

If I am not mistaken a good Z driver can do 0-60 in 5.3 which is close to what Supra turbo is doing. The Max isnt that close but its still powerful.

The guy in the Supra doesn't know how to drive. There's no excuse for losing to a fwd car on the launch. And I wasn't too impressed with my first run in with a 350z in my y2k. Not only could he not pull away from me but I was inching up on him. This is a 30-80mph run. The 3.0 VQ is a highway monster....

that's very true, you guys have an advantage on the highway because you only have 5 speeds, better gearing for highway runs

it's funny. i never knew it but that kid with the supra is in one of my classes. he grabbed me today and was saying shit like you're car is nice, it sounds nice, i like maxima's. he's a cool kid. he says that the first time we lined up there was a cop in the parking lot next to us, lucky for us he didn't bother to give chase, that's why he didn't try to get the jump on me. according to him he has a turbo boost controller and his car is tuned for 2 psi above stock, and has cam gears an exhuast and pulleys. he says he caught up with the z again later( after i got left behind) but couldn't get a good race cuz it was lunch hour traffic and the z wouldn't give him an opportunity. His supra isn't TT. one turbo 276 hp or something like that.

Obviously you haven't seen the launches on the FWD Maxima that Hal drives.

I want you to go to Hal's site and download the videos of him launching his Maxima and you tell me, I can guarantee that there are only a few street cars that can get the jump on a launch like that.

We're not talking about his turbo'ed Max. I'm only making a point about the physics of fwd vs rwd.

Besides, Hal's best run was what? 12.7@118mph? With 500hp at the wheels, a rwd car can get a much better 1/4 mile time.

Point taken and no one is ever gonna say that RWD isn't better than FWD, my point was to point out that not all FWD have issues getting that power to the ground.

In the case of Hal's launches, I'm certain that he can run 11's if he added some slicks, he was using stock steelies in I believe 15" size, so his times can be raised easily.
