make a new layer, set to default colors (press 'd') you can make the foreground a dark grey color to get lighter smoke with less-contrasting colors if you want, now go to filter > render > clouds and your whole screen will look like clouds. lower the layer transparency to where u can see both the clouds and the car, erase the clouds everywhere you don't want them. then, make the transparency back to 100% and using a brush with low opacity erase edges and touch it up so that the smoke is transparent and realistic looking. i hope u understood that, its just my way. there are tutorials around on the internet somewhere

"Filter > Render > Clouds" tip: Make the smoke puffs relative to the size of the car and more, smaller puffs looks more realistic.

IE do filter render clouds in a new document, reduce that documents size by 1/2 or so then copy + paste.
