Thinking about getting a taurus SHO-convince me

OK, here's the deal. I get $4000 for a car. I'm thinking about a 1st gen Ford taurus SHO. I can get one for about 2500-3000, and that leaves me plenty of money to make it faster. I'm asking 4 things.
1. Why should I get this car?
2. What are the first mods I should do to it?
3. Why isn't there more aftermarket support for them? They seem like nice cars, you would think there would be more support for them.
4. How well do they hold up over time? How sturdy and reliable are they?

If anyone is curious, the other cars I'm considering are a Honda CRX Si, 1st gen 300zx turbo, 1st gen Toyota MR2, 2nd gen Toyota Supra, and a 1st gen Mitsubishi eclipse turbo.

1. You shouldn't buy it.

2. You won't get to do any mods because you won't
even be able to keep up with repairs.

3. They are an ugly POS and nobody likes them.

4. If you don't get it yet...these cars are a POS.

Any of those cars you listed would be a better buy,
even if they're more expensive in the longrun
you'll end up paying the same.

those cars are nice. if u do get one, make sure u have all the receipts and paperwork that proves that the car was maintained well. alot of the gen 1 shos are fast stock and handle well. maintenance is the key especially from the previous owners history, just like any other car.

go to shoforum.com , u might be able to snag one up for a good deal thats well taken cared of. here's my suggestion if u want to mod it.

1. maintenance
2. brakes and suspension
3. power adders(u can always do this later)

I would say get a gen 2, the shifter rod update was very nice addition, most of the earlier gen 1 shifters get sloppy after time. I've had 3 of these cars, and put 200k miles on each of them. Never smoked, caused a few headaches, but if you can read a book and turn a wrench, there's nothing to be conserned about. Make sure the clutch is new, that'll save you a lot of time, headaches.... ask about when the valve lash was checked, timing belt, things like that.
