More weird music.
Recently a friend let me borrow two albums on tape to listen to.
He gave me Kraftwerk's Computer World, and Yellow Magic Orchestra's Solid State Survivor You too should enjoy these albums, especially if you are particularly into electronic music (or even if like me you're not, but have an open enough mind to listen to most anything, you'll probably still enjoy them) Computer World is the newer of the two albums having been released in 1981. Kraftwerk is rather well known, and so is this album so I'm not going to describe it too much, other than it is in fact about computers. It's really not an album that requires an "acquired taste" to be listened to, and you may even find yourself saying "I'm the operator with my pocket calculator" after listening to it. In other words, you don't have to be a fan of Kraftwerk, or even electronic music to get to love this album. But on the other hand there's Solid State Survivor. This is an earlier album than Computer World (1979) and is an almost totally different listening experience. It would be very easy for one to simply be annoyed by the music from this album, and unlike Computer World it takes somebody who's more open minded about music. Also if you thought Devo's rendition of "Satisfaction" was cool, wait till you hear Yellow Magic Orchestra's electronic version of "Day Tripper" sung with their Japanese accents, it almost sounds like they're singing backwards. If you love electronic music, then you should definately pick this one up, if you love Japanese music then you should also own this album. However if you're not particularly keen on either, then borrow it or don't touch it at all - but then again on the other hand, if you feel like expanding your horizons... I'll leave you with portions of lyrics from both albums. Computer World: Pocket Calculator "I'm the operator with my pocket calculator I'm the operator with my pocket calculator I am adding and subtracting I'm controlling and composing I'm the operator with my pocket calculator I'm the operator with my pocket calculator" Solid State Survivor: Solid State Survivor "The strangeness of the strangers Second hand teenagers Face to face they face A chemical race Minds blind Empty eyes Blank tongues ablaze No names Breathe in dreams Stand in line, cracked smiles Life to life colliders Solid state survivors"
