Just bought a 240sx, what to do?
Hello all, I just bought an '89 240sx Fastback. It is in pristine condition, and I'm loving the car thus far, but I'm the kind of guy that likes to put money into his car (like alot of people here, I bet).
I don't know that much about the car or its aftermarket support yet, so I am here asking you all what I can do to my car. Note: An engine swap is most definetely going to happen next summer. It will most likely be the sr20det, but I hear that a skyline engine swap will work, however I dont know the engine code and I cant verify that it is possible. Also, would an s13 silvia front end conversion be possible on my car? Give me any and all of your ideas! Thanks alot for the info in advance! |

Yes and yes the RB series from a skyline will fit in either the Rb20 RB25 or Rb26. Also you don't have to swap your motor if you don't want the KA that you have now is great for turboing. The S13 front will fit on your car. There is bunch of cool stuff for your car i'd dig around on a few sites for parts like http://www.raretrick.com or http://www.jdmparts.com

my engine runs perfect, but its KM's are too high for me to want to turbo it.
I was reading the FAQ, and I'm thinking of doing the s-15 front end conversion. I love those headlights. |

you are gona wana focus on the broke or messed up stuff. then focus on suspension.
take my word on that. although you say your car is in pristene condition, there is probaly a handfull of things that need to be taken care of. all used S13's are gona be like that just how the cars are |

good stuff.. and most of all..
CONGRADULATIONS. yeah man... awsome car there, gotta love it. About the engine, i'm sure people could better recomend which engine is better depending on what you intend to do with it... whats your passion? streetable quickness? drifting? drag racing? show? And, yeah, I'd reccomend you checking your suspention too... It could be in good shape, but I don't think any rubber bushings should be too pristine being that old. Also check out your shocks, its boots, and the power steering boots. If they're all straight, then right on man, you'll be right off to having some good fun with it. |

The previous owner of the car was a female doctor. She was the only owner of the car. I am getting all the maintenance records faxed up to me soon.
I'm gonna go get the car inspected tomorrow, and fix anything that might need to be done, although I dont expect much or anything. The nissan dealership I bought the car from did their own check of the car as well, and everything checked out. I think I have a gameplan now: I took out a small loan to add the the $$$ that I had to buy a car (which turned out to be the 240), so I will pay that off. I am aiming to have it paid off before next summer. At which point, I will take out a loan to do the engine swap and s-13 front end conversion (or maybe get a bigger loan to do an s-15 front conversion). Not gonna do anything to the car over winter, though. |

if i were u i would purchase an sr20det s13 red top engine. It is just as powerfull as an s14 or s15 engine, all u need to do is upgrade the garret t28 turbo up to a garret t48 ball bearing turbo. turn the boost up and slap on a cat back exahust and some other mods and your good to go. also, get the s13 body kit, that will look good.

also, THE S13 body kit? there's MANY S13 body-kits, not just one. if you meant the front end, then yeah, i would also personally go for the S13 front end (i plan to do it to my own car).

The s13 front end conversion would be quite a bit cheaper then the s15, but I love the headlights of the s15.
What kind of numbers could the sr20det red top (with all the mods you talked about) put out? I wont be able to spend uber amounts of cash, so that may be the most viable option. |

If you say you won't be able to spend uber amouts of cash what do you mean. You also said you will be buying an new engine. That won't be cheap. Numbers flucuate according to the driver. What kind of numbers are you expecting, track numbers or drag numbers. If you want drag numbers you should probably not get the sr20det. As for track numbers, anyone can put up good numbers. If you are going for the sr i think you should make a decsion early and do what rudeboy said and get cheap or used parts because otherwise you are going to have a lot of performance parts just sitting around once you get to the summer when you install that sr of yours Just my

I could afford to buy the engine and get it shipped right now, but winter is coming, so I might as well use the engine I have now for it... What I mean by not being able to spend 'uber amounts of money', I mean that a rb26dett engine would be out of my budget, but the sr20det red top is good for it.
Did I say that I would buy a new engine? If I did, than I meant to say that I would buy a JDM one off of ebay or a reputable website. I dont plan on making the car a track or drag car. It will be the car that I drive daily. I dont race very often anymore, but I love customizing my car and I also love being able to shut the mouth of a smack-talking ricer. I was just curious as to the numbers that a modified sr20det would put out. I dont plan on keeping the engine stock, but I would have to keep it that way for a while, at least until I saved up the cash to buy upgrades. It's all a process of eventuality. |
